I’ve worked on SEO for many years and throughout that time the question, “How long does SEO take to work?” has been the most common question I’ve been asked. Strictly speaking, there isn’t an actual time period for this, but for many, it’s usually somewhere between two to six months.
First up, what’s SEO?
SEO, short for Search Engine Optimisation, is the practice of creating and delivering website content that’s been optimised for organic ranking on search engine results pages (SERPS). If this is done to a good standard, search engine’s, such as Google and Bing, will be able to find these pages and rank them in their SERPS.
The best content for the search term will be on the first page. However, this super-simplified, as determining the “best content” is a complex process that takes many, many factors into account.
Does SEO depend on the competition?
Yes, very much so. So when an SEO professional says they can guarantee #1 position in search results, I’d strongly suggest you question this and definitely take it with a pinch of salt. Why? Because they have no control over what you’re competition’s doing, all they can do is increase your signals to be more competitive and hopefully outperform them.
Can SEO work for any website?
Yes, any website will benefit from creating good quality content that’s providing a suitable answer to the search term(s) it’s addressing. But the impact’s measured by the overall user experience and site authority, not just the quality of the written words on the page.
